IP set-top boxes (IP STB)
For the purpose of watching viaTV on a standard television set (not equipped with an IP set-top box), it is necessary to use an external IP set-top box. This device is then connected directly into the television set and converts the transmitted viaTV signal into a form, with which the television set operates (analogue or digital).
The IP STB is similar to a DVB-T set-top box for reception of terrestrial digital broadcasting, as far as its appearance and principle of work are concerned; nevertheless these two devices are not mutually interchangeable.
In the viaTV digital cable television service, T-Systems uses a new HD set-top Motorola VIP 1910. This set-top box offers a high quality of picture and sound – a high-definition picture (full HDTV) through HDMI connector, and, as far as sound is concerned, apart from analogue stereo, a digital sound as well (optical and coaxial output). The set-top box uses both the MPEG-2 and the MPEG-4 coding.
